Dunfermline recorded their first league win over Rangers for 31 years as the Ibrox side's miserable run continued.

An early strike from Steve Crawford and a late own goal from Paolo Vanoli gave the Pars an historic victory and left Rangers eight points adrift of league leaders Celtic.

It is a serious dent to the Gers' title aspirations but Dunfermline were worthy winners.

They took the game to Rangers from the kick-off and Stefan Klos had to be on his toes to tip a Gary Mason lob over his crossbar after barely a minute.

The German goalkeeper was left clawing the air three minutes later when the home side went in front with a simply-worked goal.

Derek Stillie's long free-kick was flicked on by Craig Brewster and Crawford clipped the ball over Klos for his 11th goal of the season.

Rangers struggled to get to grips with the artificial surface and Crawford had another chance after Brewster had put him through again but this time, under pressure from Henning Berg, he could get no power in his shot and Klos saved easily.

Rangers did not manage to create a clear-cut chance in the first half. Michael Ball curled a free-kick high over the top and Chris Burke was also well off target after some trickery on the edge of the area.

Dunfermline always looked the more menacing and Brewster set up Crawford again 12 minutes before the break but his 20-yard shot was comfortably saved by Klos.

Brewster was just inches away from connecting with an Andy Tod header in front of goal as Dunfermline threatened to nab a second goal before the break.

Rangers looked more purposeful in the second half and Michael Mols had their first shot on target after 58 minutes but Stillie was untroubled by his curling effort from the edge of the area.

Alex McLeish's side had plenty of possession but too often their final pass went astray as the Dunfermline defence was not posed too many questions.

Substitute Egil Ostenstad managed to get on the end of a Burke cross but Stillie easily saved his header.

Shota Arveladze made a difference when he came on and he set up a late chance for Bob Malcolm but the midfielder produced a woeful finish.

Then came a bizarre own goal from Vanoli when he touched the ball past his own goalkeeper in a crowded area.
