This week's Fab-Four

Last updated : 07 November 2003 By Bear Able
With cups games dominating the English fixture lists
we are "away" to Scotland for this weeks Fab Four
picks. The singles and doubles punters have done okay
for themselves so far. But Fab Four fans are still
awaiting their first win of the season from four
tries.

It was around this time last year that the forecasts
first appeared and we hit the ground running with a
straight four out of four giving the lucky lads and
lasses a 90/1 return. The bet hedgers also got back
some nice trebles as the season progressed to keep
them well ahead of the Turf Accountants.

Whether you are a cautious singles-only investor or an
accumulator fun gambler, the rules of success remain
the same. Keep your stake level and to the minimum you
can afford to lose. No odds-on selections are ever
included in these forecasts simply because in the long
term it is we, the punters, that are "keeping the
book" not the professional bookmaker. Also worth
bearing in mind, that when bookies offer odds against
in football, the difficulty in predicting the result
is increased proportionately.

Still, with a bit of thoughtful graft this little
problem can be overcome. So long as we keep the number
of selections down to a reasonable level we can
combine the logistics of patience with stakes
alongside the mathematical probability of form into
hard cash. Once again the hard work has been done for
you lucky losers, so take your pick from this weeks
selections.

This weeks Fab Four-

Aberdeen v HEARTS 11/10 - Bet Of The Day

Outwith the Old Firm the Jambos have suffered only one
defeat; a 1-0 reverse away to Hibs way back in August.
Since then they chalked up three straight victories in
a row, beating the Arabs 3-0 and the Pars 1-0 at home
before that fine 2-0 trouncing away to Kilmarnock.
Gave a good account of themselves despite the 4-0
reverse at home to Rangers, and followed this up with
a decent enough 1-1 draw at Fir Park. Coming from
behind versus Dundee at home they were unfortunate not
to take all three points as the match ended 2-2.

The visit to Parkhead saw them at the sufferance end
of a five-nil scoreline, but a week later they had
picked themselves up magnificently at Firhill for
"thrills" to the tune of 4-1. Last week emphatic 3-1
home win versus Livingstone perhaps confirmed once
again that there is only one Third Force in Scotland.

They face an Aberdeen side who are once again hitching
up their skirts and winking coyly at the First
Division as they hang around the relegation street
corner in 11th place.

They started the season with three straight downers to
Hearts 1-2 (H), Rangers 2-3 (A) and Dunfermline 1-2
(H),  then an early (6 mins) Anderson strike gave them
a fortunate 1-1 draw at Easter road while a last-gasp
effort by the same striker saved their blushes at home
to Partick gave the Dons their only home win of the
season.

The Dons did manage to beat Kilmarnock (3-1) the
following week but have not scored a goal since as
they fell on the swords of  Dundee United (H 0-1),
Celtic (A 4-0) and finally last weeks 0-3 defeat at
home to Motherwell.

Dundee v MOTHERWELL 12/5

Motherwell in 5th place, started off the season poorly
with two straight defeats, but since then only Celtic
have managed to get a result from the ring of "Steel
Men". With three draws (including a visit from
Champions Rangers), and four wins to their credit
since, all appears 'Well at Fir Park. Last weeks
hearty 3-0 thumping away to Aberdeen perhaps
underlines their confidence in travelling this year.

Dundee are one place in front courtesy of two wins and
four draws in their last six games. These victories
however were at home to the bottom two Aberdeen (2-0)
and Partick Thistle (1-0). The two draws that followed
v Dundee United (Away1-1) and home to struggling Hibs
(1-1) last week fail to impress. At 12/5 this looks
like the bet of the day.

Ayr United v INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE 6/5

A crucial match for Caley who although in 6th place
are still only 3 points adrift from the top. After
eight games undefeated the highlanders nose-dived in
the last three against fellow Championship contenders
Queen Of The South, Falkirk and Clyde.

They face 9th place strugglers Ayr who have proved, if
proof was ever needed, that two wins from eleven
starts is not the stuff of Champions.

Raith Rovers v QUEEN OF THE SOUTH 11/8

The Queens top the division courtesy of only 3 defeats
in eleven games. From the last six games the Queens
chalked up four straight wins in a row, including the
4-1 and 3-2 respective victories over their fellow
Championship challengers ICT and Clyde.

A narrow 1-0 defeat against Ross or the draw against
St Johnstone last week will not dampen their sprits in
the slightest.

They will be further encouraged by
seventh-and-tumbling Rovers recent slump in form which
has seen them suffer four losses in their last five
matches.
