Card displays and singing sections first appeared at Ibrox, and then afterwards at Parkhead, and of course Operation Tango had the hallmark humour of the Rangers support all over it.
This particular brainchild was so successful that it reached an international football audience, and while it was predictably glossed over in this country, those who speak German, Italian, French and Spanish have enjoyed a hearty chuckle over this inspired mickey-take of the Celtic support.
Technology was successfully harnessed to make the Celtic support humiliate itself, and how we laughed. It shows how a simple and successful idea, requiring hardly any expense, can entertain the football world far beyond these shores. The mere mention now of Operation Tango has Celtic supporters in cringe mode.
In bygone days though, it was Celtic which demonstrated imagination when it was the first football club in these islands to launch a club newspaper - the Celtic View. I still remember seeing friends eagerly buying it while I was left empty-handed and frustrated.
When the Rangers News was launched in response to this Celtic initiative, it was eagerly seized on by the Rangers public, but the content was rarely stimulating. In some ways, the club newspaper at Rangers did what it said on the tin - it provided news about players and a variety of club matters - but it didn`t tend to venture too often into areas of controversy.
Celtic`s weekly rag though, was, and still is, different. It gives the Celtic view on the world as well as news and information, and in this respect it is superior to our own limited blatt.
The Rangers club newspaper is reluctant to articulate on subjects which could provoke dissent or upset. Under the tenure of Sir David Murray, it has continued to be what it always was, even from the earliest moment after its belated birth - a news and information paper which steers clear of areas of genuine and worthwhile debate.
Its Celtic counterpart has never had any qualms about waxing lyrically about everything and anything, and even although it says little that would be endorsed here, it is at least prepared to stray into territory that its supporters are actually inhabiting.
It`s time for change at the Rangers News. It needs to embrace the new and opinionated world that exists. It needs to provide a platform for supporter opinion, even when it is dissenting opinion, and give a public airing to it on the pages of the official club newspaper.
A vibrant and stimulating Rangers News might actually be worth buying, and a welcome boost in sales figures would surely result. There are good reasons for going down this road, but damn few for staying and stagnating where we are.
Any support which can make an international success of an idea like Operation Tango should not be ignored or sidelined. The real strength of Rangers lies within the Rangers support, and the club newspaper`s recognition of this simple truth is long overdue.
