The Pope, Boy George, E.T. and Prince William.

Much water has flowed down the Ganges since Rangers last suffered a defeat by great rivals, Celtic, in a Scottish League Cup final.

It was December 4th, 1982 when the red, white and blue legions last had to endure this discomfort.

This was early in the presidency of the late Ronald Reagan and during the first ministry of Margaret Thatcher.

It was also the year of the Falklands War, the Pope`s first visit to the United Kingdom, the emergence of Boy George, the first sighting of ET, the birth of Prince William and the arrival of Channel 4.

Notable as the year satellite television was given a government green light.

Jim Bett scored the Rangers goal in a 2-1 defeat to Celtic and Ally Dawson, Craig Paterson and John McLelland all featured in blue jerseys.

The Rangers revolution hadn`t been thought of, nine-in-a-row was a pipedream, and Ayr United fan, David Murray, was still two years away from being named Scottish Businessman of the Year.

Since that dismal day, there have been four Old Firm League Cup Finals, and good has triumphed over dark forces each time.

1990-91 Rangers 2 Celtic 1

1986-87 Rangers 2 Celtic 1

1983-84 Rangers 3 Celtic 2

Rangers have won the League Cup 25 times and been runners-up just six times.

Celtic have won the trophy on 13 occasions and been runners-up as many times as they`ve won it.

Let`s hope that the present blue jersey occupants keep faith with the dominance enjoyed by those who have gone before when the clubs meet again in the League Cup Final on Sunday.

Got to it, Rangers.

Let`s make it 26, and counting ...
