THE HISTORY OF THE TIPSTER COMPETITION
By sonowilliam2
It began away back in March 2005, when Amabear and I were thinking of a way to make followfollow ( the old old forum ) more appealing to like minded Bears/Bearettes. So we decided on a football competition ( how original eh?)
I put up a thread entitled " The Ace Tipster Competition" and after a while others became interested, and thus the tipster competition was born.
The rules (which have drastically changed over the course) were posted and we were up and running. Thirty three signed in for the very first tipster competition. KBOTW was the unofficial tipster champion. He came back briefly in term three however due to circumstances retired midway throughout that term.
By August 2005 it was decided to continue but make predicitons based on champions league fixtures, and while many more entered we were to be cut short and the competition postponed due to events elsewhere.
Sometime in the December of 2005 I logged on to the new follow follow forum on proboards, whereupon I was greeted with a private message from poster EVOTHSAT who requested that i continue to run with a tipster competition, and after much deliberation this I did and renamed it " The all new tipster competition ." This was to be soley based on the remaining SPL fixtures from January 06 through May 06 ( this period was no doubt the making of the tipster competition.)
In August 2006 , now back on Footymad, we brought in a second and third division and some of the rules were changed as the ever popular tipster competition rose to seventy two players. The main rule change that term ( two ) was the 'joker' idea from poster Billyonthewall: it has been seen as a great addition and remains a mainstay of the competition to this day.
July 2007 brought the first ever tipster 'Hall of Fame', my way of crediting all who have played in this competition and became well known tipsters throughout.
December the 12th 2007 was to be undoubtedly the saddest day in tipster memory as we sadly lost the 'auld yin' of the family in Amabear, who had been my inspiration to maintain with this competition throughout. At this time I honestly felt like packing it all in, however with great support from the family and tipsters alike I was encouraged to keep it going. Special thanks to MDC who suggested calling the competition 'The Amabear tipster competition' in memory of my dear and sadly missed dad. This competition is now based on the maintenance of his memory.
It was with a heavy heart that we continued to proceed with term five in the January of 2008, in memory of the great Amabear, a man who was the brains behind this idea; a man who would never miss a prediction and a man who would simply scrawl down on his many disregarded pieces of paper his predictions for this week such was his dedication.
The summer of 2008 brought us our first ever Euro tipster competition (won by the Wacokid) as more and more became interested resulting in a further division being opened on the August of that same year ( the fourth division was now duly underway ) and without further ado I then called upon volunteers to assist me in the running of this great competition - all requests were met obligingly and carried off with great aplomb.
Term seven was to surpasss even my expectations, as in the October of 2008 the number of entries now hit the one hundred and fifteen mark ( and yet again another division was opened ).There is many a poster I can thank for the running of the tipster competition, however to do this I could be here forever.
Simply put: thanks to all for taking part in the 'Amabear Tipster competition.'
There have been many who have entered this competition over the last five years - at the last count it was over two hundred. Term ten begins on Monday 15th February with registration taking place within the casinoloyale forum between the dates of 16th Jan - 13th February. All fellow posters are wholeheartedly invited to join in with the main aim: to become the Football tipster champion of Followfollow.
I will be only be too happy to answer any questions via PM.
