THAT MONDAY MORNING FEELING - Nice One Nacho!
The wee man must have been well pissed off to be left on the bench but he sure did the business when called upon. Phew, we were so close to throwing another two points away.
Having been told he was not part of PLG's plans, Nacho Novo could have been at Coventry City, probably earning more money, but he opted to stay on at Ibrox and fight for his place. Ain't we glad he did? He was great in Livorno, grabbing a goal at a time when the Italians looked like putting us under some pressure, and he was the main man at Love Street, again popping up with a vital strike.
We should never have been in the situation where we needed a late goal to save the day but that is the way it is with Rangers right now. We don't have that ruthless streak to kill off opponents and we almost paid dearly for it at the weekend.
Looking on from the main stand, Richard Gough (get a haircut, big fella) must have been so frustrated to see Papac and Rodriguez struggle to handle Sutton. Like his cheating brother, the St.Mirren man wasn't afraid to put himself about and I couldn't help but think that Goughie would have loved to get out there just for a minute or two to put him in his place.
Their first goal just typified our season. A good cross was fired in from the left but the ball was in the air long enough for either of our centre backs or even Lionel Letizi to attack it. Yet nobody took the initiative and Sutton was left with a free header. Oh no, here we go again.
Thankfully, rather than roll over, the Gers rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in. Baz was immense in midfield, Hemdani was impressive and Charlie Adam clearly enjoyed his return to Love Street. His free-kick for the equaliser was a real gem and, once Tommy Buffel shot us into the lead, it looked like we might go on to win impressively.
But while it was still 2-1 we were just one blip away from trouble and for the second time in four days a ref was conned into awarding a penalty against Rangers. For a brief moment I thought Letizi had saved it and, checking my watch, I anticipated this column being another depressing rant.
The Nacho Man came to the rescue with the late winner but he appeared to want to make us sweat, seemingly waiting for an age before knocking the ball into the net. Next time, just rattle it and spare me the unnecessary palpitations, wee man.
So we are back in third place again, right on the Watery Farts' shoulder and, hopefully, we will hang on in there, maybe even leapfrogging over them, to make our visit to Tynecastle in a few weeks time something to look forward to. We can't even begin to look beyond second spot until we can approach such a game confident of victory.
There is plenty of room for improvement in our performances but we have to believe our players have it in them and, more importantly, that Le Gaffer can get it out of them. For now, we have to make do with winning, even if we scrape though like we did on Sunday. Once we get into the habit of winning regularly, we can then begin to focus on doing it in some style.
And I'd like to think we'll see more over Nacho Novo in the weeks and months ahead. On the evidence of Livorno and Paisley, he is surely worthy of more than a bit part in PLG's future plans.
