With Leaders Celtic surprisingly losing by a solitary goal at Barrowfield, to a Hearts side they had previously thrashed 4-1 at Riccarton just 6 days earlier, the day before it gave enormous incentive to both the Light and Dark Blues to win this crucial match and take pole position in the title race.
It was the home side who started the brightest when after only 4 minutes Scot Arfield rose above the defence to rattle the post with a header following a corner kick.
5 minutes later Mark Stewart had a guilt edged opportunity to score when only 6 yards out his headed effort missed the target as the ball was flighted in from a free kick.
The Bairns were to rue those missed chances on 10 minutes as their defence hesitated as the ball neared keeper Jamie Barclay, as everyone paused Andy Shinnie kept his momentum and pressured Scobie into a pass back which Barclay tried to block without using his hands, as everyone went for the ball Shinnie got to it first and was then bundled over by Barclay for a penalty kick.
It was Shinnie himself who took the spot kick and calmly stroked the ball home to Barclays right and put the Young 'Gers in the driving seat.
10 minutes later a long lob from the midfield landed right to the feet of Stevie Lennon on the edge of the box, as he held off the challenge of a Falkirk defender he steadied himself as he moved inside the box and unleashed an unstoppable shot past Barclay for Rangers second goal.
On 29 minutes the match took a tragic turn when under an innocuous aerial challenge Dayne Robertson landed awkwardly on the atrocious bone dry surface and broke his leg, the crowd gasped in shock as the distraught youngster lay in agony with his foot horrifically twisted from his leg.
The referee immediately removed both teams from the field as everyone waited almost ½ hour for the ambulance to arrive and following its departure from the field the match resumed 36 minutes later.
The remaining 16 minutes of the first half were played out tamely as, understandably, both teams concentrations were elsewhere.
Only in the last minute of the half did Rangers threaten when Andy Shinnie rasped a shot which Barclay did well to turn over the bar, then from the resultant corner Chris Smith saw his header comfortably saved.
The Second period saw Falkirk try to salvage the match as Arfield lined up a shot which Gallacher saved with ease.
On 78 minutes Dean Furman drove a free kick into the wall from 20 yards out, as the ball bounced around the 6 yard area it finally fell to Stevie Lennon who easily stroked it home to put the match beyond Falkirk.
With the match coming to a close Lennon crossed perfectly for Ross Perry to have a headed attempt at adding a forth but the big defenders attempt went inches over.
2 minutes later it was the turn of Paul Emslie to cross from a free kick, this time for Perry's defensive partner Chris Smith to try his luck but again the headed attempt went slightly over.
Rangers did give the goal difference a boost in the final minute when Andy Shinnie crossed for Jordan McMillan and this time the header went in off the post to put the seal on a fine mornings work.
