The award is given by UEFA's Executive Committee to member associations who can demonstrate their excellent work in the grassroots sector.

Jim Fleeting, the SFA Director of Football Development, said: "It is very welcome to win this kind of recognition from UEFA for the hard work we are doing throughout Scotland at grassroots level."

Scotland was a pioneering member of UEFA's Grassroots Charter, which was created in 2004. The first awards for the progress since then were made at the recent UEFA Congress in Germany, and five of the associations * the others were England, Germany, Netherlands and Norway - were awarded five-star membership of the Charter.

Jim added: "By signing the Grassroots Charter, Scotland agreed to fulfill criteria set by UEFA, and we have demonstrated that our programmes are of a high standard. However, we must always go forward and we are aiming for continued improvement through the Action Plan for Scottish Youth Football."

Each association enters the UEFA Grassroots Charter with one-star status, and additional stars are given on the basis of specific grassroots areas including the nurturing of women's and girls' football, social programmes including disability football, the number of participants, and promotion of grassroots football. While five is currently the top level, up to seven stars are possible for a national association which pursues even more comprehensive grassroots policies.
