There would need to be two alternative sets of fixtures. One set would obviously be based on progress and one on being beaten by Fiorentina.
There are only two scenarios available to the SPL.
(a) Rangers qualify for the Uefa Cup Final
or
(b) Rangers don't qualify for the Uefa Cup Final.
Surely they can release 2 fixture lists? The first based on the premise that we qualify and second on that we don't.
One other factor to bear in mind is that the police apparently require 10 days' notice.
THU 24 APR: Fiorentina (H) - UEFA Cup Semi Final
SUN 27 APR: Celtic (A)
THU 01 MAY: Fiorentina (A) - UEFA Cup Semi Final
SUN 4 MAY: Hibs (A)
WED 7 MAY: Motherwell (H)
SAT 10 MAY: Dundee United (H)
WED 14 MAY: UEFA Cup Final
SUN 18 MAY: Aberdeen (A)
SAT 24 MAY: Scottish Cup Final
Still to be scheduled:
St Mirren (A) - SPL
Motherwell (A) - SPL
Arguments against the extension of the season are spurious. Former Celtic players Bertie Auld and Tommy Gemmell have claimed in that in previous seasons 'Celtic were forced to play three games in five days' - in fact they CHOSE to play those games on that occasion because they wanted to have everything out of the way before playing Liverpool in a friendly at Anfield and already had the league wrapped up.
Claims that the Scottish season has never been extended is a lie.
70/71 - Celtic won the league - they played three games after the official end of the season.
71/72 - Celtic won the league - they played one game after the official end of the season.
73/74 - Celtic won the league - they played three games after the official end of the season.
Tosh McKinlay claimed that "we" - ie Scotland - did not extended the season when Dundee United played in the 1987 UEFA Cup. Yes we did, United played a league fixture after the official end of the season.
Gordon Strachan weighed in with his unbiased view that when Aberdeen won the European Cup Winners Cup they did so in a season where they played 73 games so Rangers should get on with it. In fact they played 60 games.
Need I go on?
