Which rather begs the question - why bother?
Without a change in Board personnel or policies then it’s simply going to be another mouth to feed (no doubt at around the £80k mark) for no discernible benefit other than an increase in the quantity of tripe being dispensed.
If Jack Irvine couldn’t work his black magic with the collection of integrity-laden directors we have then what chance anyone else? The hapless Paul Tyrrell is apparently weaving his particular magic on a part-time basis which means that a media request made on a Monday may in fact be responded to on a Thursday. A carrier pigeon might be an improvement.
Saying that might actually be a little cruel. Tyrrell has at least reduced the volume of flak the Board are getting by the simple expedient of telling them to shut up - the fewer public pronouncements they make at least cuts the opportunities for foot in mouth incidents.
The problem anyone expected to fulfil the PR role at Ibrox has is of course the quality of the product you have to work with. A Board that doesn’t contain a Rangers fan is never going to have the trust of the vast majority of the punters. In fact, we’ve seen Rangers fans on the Board in the last few years who either went over to the dark side or found the whole experience so poisonous they resigned. In that sort of atmosphere it’s always going to be a hard sell.
Football is about dreams and loyalty. Our club at the moment is essentially leaderless, it has no vision, the directors are widely seen as either bent or inept, and the football has in large measure been devoid of entertainment. Trying to glamourise a bread and water diet is a hard task when the people in the Board Room resemble pigs at a trough.
So, whoever gets the gig is in for a hard time. Best of luck with that!
