Place your bets for the National!

As your "Notions on the National" person alluded to, this year's race is
very difficult to work out. The ground being good means that most of the
field should be suited by the going. The handicapper has framed the race in
a way that means the vast majority of the horses are in the handicap proper
which means that theortically each horse has a sound chance to prevail.

The horse I like is GINGEMBRE. He won the Scottish National on similar
ground and has been trained for this race all year. He has not been a well
horse this year though he was second in the Hennessy at Newbury, but
reports are that he is healthy now. He has the speed, the stamina and the
class to win - given the required luck in running. The National is never a
race to be too gung - ho about as there are too many imponderables, though
the softening of the fences tends to mean that if your horse can settle
over the first few fences there is less too worry about now than in the
past.

Other horses likely to give a good account at large prices are BALLINCLAY
KING, YOU'RE A GOODUN, THE BUNNY BOILER and MONTIFAULT. I will have
something each-way on all of these. Shop around for each way terms, some
bookies will be going each-way the first five and one or two each-way the
first six home.

PS from Notions on the National - Ad Hoc is trained in England and has been
for as long as I can remember. If you want to back an Irish horse the
appropriately named, for Liverpool, YOU'LLNEVERWALKALONE or MONTY'S PASS appear to have the best credentials.

Why don't Rangers show the National at half-time on the big screens? They
used to show it on the concourse TV's. The race is due to start at 3.45pm.

Good Luck.
