There was just the one Rangers player in either starting line-up - Andrew Little for Northern Ireland, although three more lined up amongst the Scots substitutes, namely Scott Gallacher, Steven Lennon and Rory Loy.
The home side struck in just three minutes when Paul Caddis made good ground down the right - his cutback being rifled home by Jamie Murphy.
Five minutes later the scores were level when Irish goalkeeper Trevor Carson's kick-out from hand was nodded on by Little for Josh McQuoid to race through and clip the ball home.
Alan Martin in the home goal had suffered an injury in attempting to prevent the equaliser - and he was substituted by Gallacher in fifteen minutes.
The visitors snatched the lead ten minutes later when, in almost a carbon-copy of the first goal, McQuoid again went through on a long Adam Chapman punt to chip the ball over Gallacher.
Scotland's youngsters tried to respond - Murphy hitting the outside of the post in 28 minutes from Chris Maguire's corner.
The Scots spurned a golden opportunity to get back on level terms two minutes before the interval when Scott Arfield's penalty was saved by Carson, the spot-kick having been awarded when Daniel Lafferty collided with Kevin McDonald.
That miss was to prove crucial - for Ibrox youngster Little made it 3-1 in fifty minutes when he volleyed home a Shane Ferguson cutback.
It was a long road back for the home side now - Murphy did have a half-cnance in 63 minutes when he volleyed a Caddis cross over, then seven minutes later Paul Coutts cut in from the left only to see his 25-yard shot held by Carson.
Rory Loy replaced Scott Arfield in 69 minutes.
Carson again defied the Scots in the last minute when he made a fine double save from firstly Steven Lennon (who had come on as a substitute ten minutes earlier) and David Goodwillie.
