As we collectively pull our hair out, regarding the lack of movement in strengthening a Championship winning squad already best described as threadbare, I was invited to look back in time to the Summer of 2008, when the Two in a Row squad started out.
At the close of the transfer window 2008, we had the following senior squad to choose from:
Allan McGregor
Neil Alexander
Graeme Smith
David Weir
Saša Papac
Kirk Broadfoot
Christian Dailly
Madjid Bougherra
Steven Smith
Steven Whittaker
Pedro Mendes
Barry Ferguson
Brahim Hemdani
Kevin Thomson
Maurice Edu
Charlie Adam
Lee McCulloch
Chris Burke
Steven Davis
DaMarcus Beasley
John Fleck
Kris Boyd
Nacho Novo
Steven Naismith
Kenny Miller
Jean-Claude Darcheville
Kyle Lafferty
Andrius Velička
Alan Gow & Andy Webster were farmed out on loan, Carlos Cuellar & Daniel Cousin had just been transferred to EPL sides, Filip Sebo sold to Valenciennes, for fees totalling over £10m.
From that Squad, the following players have been sold on/released:
Graeme Smith
Christian Dailly
Steven Smith
Pedro Mendes
Barry Ferguson
Brahim Hemdani
Kevin Thomson
Charlie Adam
Chris Burke
DaMarcus Beasley
Kris Boyd
Nacho Novo
Jean-Claude Darcheville
along with last season’s breakthrough star Danny Wilson.
The only replacements used, have been from our own Under 19s side, as the club scrapped the reserve side in Summer 2009.
The 1st team squad we are presented with for next season:
2010/11 (at 22/7/10)
Allan McGregor
Neil Alexander
David Weir
Sasa Papac
Steven Whittaker
Kirk Broadfoot
Andy Webster
Madjid Bougherra
Gregg Wylde
Maurice Edu
Lee McCulloch
Steven Davis
John Fleck
Andrew Shinnie
Steven Naismith
Andrius Velicka
Kenny Miller
Kyle Lafferty
Andrew Little
With the potential for more departures, and no imminent additions to the squad aside from a handful of lads from ouryouth system with minimal SPL experience, it’s going to take another monumental effort from all that are left to be able to
cope with the lack of depth we have, to be able to field a recognisable side, let alone compete in four competitions.
