Fiorentina and Inter kicked-off the season in the best possible way on Saturday evening, by playing an exciting and end to end game in Florence. Inter (many observers tip for the title) were 3-0 up after 61 minutes, with the scorer of the best goal of the last World Cup, Esteban Cambiasso bagging a brace. There was also a goal on his Inter debut for the Swedish international Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Fiorentina replied with two goals from Luca Toni to set-up an exciting finale, but Mancini's men held on.

Inter's city rivals AC Milan were too good for Lazio and won 2-1, with prolific striker ‘Pippo' Inzaghi and new boy Ricardo Oliveira scoring the goals.
Week 1 also saw a strange occurance, with three of the league‘s ‘minnows' (Catania, Siena and Empoli) all winning away from home.

Juve playing in ‘Serie B' for the first time in their history, could only manage a draw away at Rimini. 10,000 fans packed out the host's stadium and they were rewarded with an entertaining game. Juve took the lead, but an error from ex-Gers defender Jean Alain Boumsong allowed Ricchiuti to grab an equaliser for the home team.

Moving onto Holland, where Shota's AZ Alkmaar are tied at the top of the table with Dutch giants Ajax.
Louis Van Gaal's side won 2-0 away at NEC Nijmegen, with the ex-Ranger helping himself to one of the goals.

Ajax won 3-0 at home against Vitesse Arnhem. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, last season's top scorer struck twice.

Elsewhere Feyenoord got their first win of the season - beating Sparta 4-1 in the Rotterdam derby and PSV are up to sixth in the table after seeing off Willem II Tilburg 3-1.

It was cup week-end in Germany, so there were no league matches, but plenty of shocks! No fewer than 5 'Bundesliga' teams were eliminated, with Mainz, Arminia Bielefeld, Werder Bremen, Hamburg and Cottbus all crashing out.
Peter Lovenkrands's Schalke scored an amazing 9 goals in their win against Hansa, unfortunately for the Dane he didn't manage to get on the score-sheet and was substituted at half time.

Valencia won the match of the week in Spain, defeating Atletico 1-0 in Madrid. David Villa scored the only goal of the game for ‘Los Ches'. Golden boy Fernando Torres was sent off to cap a miserable evening for ‘Los Colchoneros'.

Barcelona blew Osasuna away at the Camp Nou, scoring 3 in the first half, Eto'o bagged a brace with wonderkid Messi scoring the other.
Real Madrid got their first win of the season away in Levante, new striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy netting an hat-trick in a scrappy game.

Thankfully the weekend's games went ahead in Portugal after the 'Gil Vicente' case. Two of the 3 giants of Portuguese football (Sporting and Porto) won, but Septic's CL opponents Benfica were woeful in losing 3-0 away at Boavista.

The match of the week in France saw Marseille beat deadly rivals PSG in Paris to claim back top spot from Lyon, who won 2-0 against Troyes - Juninho Pernambuco in sensational form, in scoring and setting up a goal for team-mate Cris.
