Disastrous Draw For Rangers

Rangers' Champions' League hopes lie all but dead and buried following today's 1-1 draw with Aberdeen at Ibrox.

The Light Blues now sit five points adrift of Hearts in the race for second place, the Tynecastle men having defeated Kilmarnock 2-0 in Edinburgh.

Today's draw was yet another abysmal performance from the Ibrox men, who have now scored just three goals in the last three games. Indeed Rangers, with today's failure, have failed to beat Aberdeen all season - for the first time since the Alex Ferguson reign at Pittodrie all of twenty years ago.

Manager Alex McLeish made one change from last Saturday with Chris Burke replacing the injured Peter Lovenkrands.

The visiting support poluted the Stadium with their sickening songs of hate recalling the Ian Durrant / Neil Simpson incident of eighteen years ago.

The Dons were certainly adventurous in the opening stages - Zander Diamond's header from Jamie Smith's corner being blocked by Ronald Waterreus in thirteen minutes.

Four minutes later Kris Boyd saw his twenty-yard shot from a Barry Ferguson pass held by goalkeeper Jamie Langfield.

Aberdeen were giving as good as they got however - Gary Dempsey's volley from a Diamond cross being just wide of the target in twenty minutes.

It was end-to-end stuff, Alan Hutton's header from a Burke corner being clawed away by Langfield four minutes later.

Rangers had a strong penalty claim waved aside by Referee Mike McCurry in 35 minutes when Boyd was scythed down by Diamond as he turned on a Burke cross.

Ibrox resounded to the strains of 'Derry's Walls' with all four stands singing in unison - a tremendous and uplifting spectacle.

Langfield again kept his sideon level terms three minutes later when at full stretch he turned over a backheader from Sotirios Kyrgiakos following a Steven Smith free-kick.

The half ended goalless - but the visitors almost broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart when Dempsey's 25-yard drive from a Steve Lovell lay-off struck the crossbar.

Three minutes later however the opening goal duly arrived - at the other end when Boyd found the net with a turn and shot from a Dado Pros pass.

Rangers went for the jugular - and might have added a second in 55 minutes when Boyd, at full stretch, headed onto the roof of the net from Prso's overhead kick.

Against the run of play, Aberdeen equalised in 67minutes when Scott Severin found the net with the aid of a deflection from a 25-yard free-kick.

In the same instance, news filtered through that Hearts had broken the deadlock at Tynecastle.

Four minutes later things might have got even worse when Jamie Smith rounded Waterreus only to see Smith fire over from his cutback.

Rangers piled on the pressure in the closing minutes - Prso being released by Julien Rodriguez in 88 minutes only to see his low drive parried by Langfield.

Sixty seconds later yet another strong penalty claim was denied when Smith's twenty-yard drive was blocked by a hand.

A crescendo of booing greeted the final whistle - but afterwards a defiant Alex McLeish stressed:

"We were in a similar position last year - there will be twists and turns to the death. We have to take the good and bad breaks alike. We have to look forward, not back. The League table doesn't lie."

Interestingly Dons' Boss Jimmy Calderwood observed:

"The Rangers' crowd were magnificent today - there was a great atmosphere. We have caused ourselves problems if Rangers don't get second place - but we still have to go to Tynecastle. 4th place in the SPL should be in
Europe."
