Celtic acts to stamp out fans’ IRA chants

CELTIC Football Club has taken its strongest-ever stand against bigotry in an attempt to stamp out the chanting of IRA slogans at matches.
In a ground-breaking and long-awaited development, Ian McLeod, Celtic’s chief executive, has written to the club’s 50,000 season-ticket holders to ask them to help eradicate support for sectarianism. It is believed to be the first time a Celtic official has mentioned the IRA in connection with the club’s fans.

The Glasgow club, along with their rivals Rangers, have come under heavy criticism for not doing enough to combat the sectarian element among their supports. This reached a nadir last month when Neil Lennon, a Celtic player, was forced to pull out of a Northern Ireland international match because he had received a death threat from a loyalist group. Lennon had not received any barracking when playing for his country until he joined Celtic .

Then, at last week’s Motherwell v Celtic match, a minute’s silence for the victims of the 11 September terrorist attacks was ruined by the singing of pro-IRA songs by a section of the Celtic support.

Mr McLeod said: "It is a concern that a limited but vocal number within our support seek to use the gathering of Celtic supporters as a way of demonstrating their own separate support for organisations at the extreme of the political spectrum - most notably the IRA.

"I am appealing to those who attend games not to participate in or condone such activities in order that Celtic is not compromised."

Donald Gorrie, a Liberal Democrat MSP, welcomed Mr McLeod’s direct approach. A veteran campaigner against sectarianism, Mr Gorrie has attempted to ban public displays of sectarianism through legislation.

"It is time for other clubs to get across the message that they do not condone the shameful actions of a minority of supporters," said Mr Gorrie.

Lawwell vows to tackle Celtic fans' IRA chants

CELTIC chief executive Peter Lawwell admits that the club have little control over sectarian chanting at away grounds after the "embarrassing" events at Hearts last week, when supporters of the club appeared to ignore recent UEFA concern over discriminatory chanting.
 

Lawwell insists the problem has been virtually eradicated among fans within Celtic Park on match days. But the Glasgow club will now meet with officials at other grounds to stamp out sectarianism from "idiots".

Lawwell told Scotland on Sunday: "We have made great strides at Celtic Park and anyone who comes here will not leave with the view that sectarian singing is prevalent.

"You will always have some idiots, but, at Celtic Park, it has reached a margin for error that is difficult to wipe out. The problem is 99 per cent resolved at our home games.

"The issue we have is the away support and songs sung in support of the Provisional IRA. These are unacceptable and offensive and last Sunday was embarrassing. They are not overtly sectarian songs, they are political songs that have no place at football.

"We will be addressing that. One of the reasons the away support is still an issue is that it is not within our jurisdiction. You need the local police forces and stewarding to identify and then police or eject supporters, or identify to us those that are creating the problem.

"We have ideas about how we can co-operate better with the local authorities that we are going to take to them. I do not think it is a massive problem, however."
